Privacy Policy

Effective Date: August 14, 2026 · Last Updated: August 14, 2026

1. Introduction

Welcome to Closer ("the App"), a mobile application operated by Closer Labs("we," "our," or "us"). We are committed to protecting your personal information and your right to privacy.

This Privacy Policy explains what information we collect, how we use it, who we share it with, and what rights you have in relation to it. By using Closer, you agree to the collection and use of information described in this policy.

Some of the data described here — precise location, cycle and health data, and photo and video sharing — is only collected if you turn the corresponding feature on. None of it is on by default. Those sections are marked optional below.

If you have questions or concerns, please contact us at: closerlabs@gmail.com

2. Information We Collect

2.1 Account Information (via Clerk Authentication)

When you create an account, we collect through our authentication provider, Clerk, Inc.:

  • Email address
  • Phone number, if you sign in by phone or add one to your account
  • Name or display name
  • Profile photo (optional)
  • Authentication tokens and session data
  • OAuth data if you sign in with Apple, Google, or other providers
  • User ID — the account identifier we use to link your data to you
  • Device identifiers associated with your account and your push notification token
  • Birth year — see Section 16, Age Requirement. We ask for your date of birth during onboarding solely to confirm you meet our minimum age, and we store only the year — never the day or month.

2.2 Content You Create and Share

When you use Closer, we collect content you actively create:

  • Photos and videos uploaded to shared memories and timeline albums
  • Love notes and messages sent to your partner
  • Mood check-in data — your daily emotional state (Great, Good, Okay, Low, Struggling)
  • Question responses — your answers to daily intimacy questions
  • Milestone and anniversary dates you set
  • Care activity logs — care gestures and appreciation entries
  • Therapy lesson progress and responses to relationship exercises
  • Streak and achievement data — daily engagement records
  • Together counter date — your relationship start date
  • Date ideas and activity preferences, including a ZIP code you type yourself when requesting nearby date ideas
  • Glimpse entries, Daily Spark completions, and Roll the Dice results
  • Journal and note text you write in the app

2.3 Health Data (Optional)

If you turn on cycle tracking, we collect period dates, symptoms, mood, and energy levels, and we generate predicted ovulation and fertile windows. This is described in full in Section 4.

Closer does not collect fitness or activity data. We do not record workouts, steps, exercise minutes, heart rate, or any other activity metric.

2.4 Precise Location (Optional)

If you turn on the Together live distance sharing feature, we collect precise GPS coordinates and the name of the Wi-Fi network your device is joined to. This is described in full in Section 3.

2.5 Purchase Information

If you subscribe to Closer Premium, we collect purchase history — which product you bought, when, whether the subscription is active, and its renewal or expiry status — through Apple StoreKit and RevenueCat. We never receive or store your payment card details. See Section 11.

2.6 Automatically Collected Information

  • Product interaction data — which screens and features you open, session duration, and in-app events, collected through PostHog
  • Device ID, device type, iOS version, and app version
  • IP address (used for security and fraud prevention)
  • Crash data and performance data — stack traces, error reports, and diagnostic measurements, collected through Sentry. This data is not linked to your identity.

We do notcollect the Advertising Identifier (IDFA), and we do not use any of this data to track you across other companies' apps or websites. See Section 10.

3. Precise Location and the Together Feature

This is real collection, not on-device processing. When live distance sharing is on, your coordinates leave your phone and are stored on our servers so your partner can see them.

3.1 When we collect it

Precise GPS coordinates are collected only if you turn on the Together live distance sharing feature. It is off by default and requires two separate things:

  • An iOS location permission grant, which you give in the system prompt or in iOS Settings; and
  • An in-app toggle that you switch on inside Closer.

If either one is off, we collect no location data at all.

3.2 What we collect and where it goes

  • Precise GPS coordinates. Your coordinates are transmitted to our backend, operated by Convex, Inc. in the United States, and stored there so that your paired partner can see the distance between you and whether you are approaching.
  • Wi-Fi network name. While sharing is on, we also collect the name (SSID) of the Wi-Fi network your device is joined to. We use it to distinguish "at home" from "out" without repeatedly waking up GPS, which would drain your battery. We do not collect Wi-Fi passwords, network traffic, or the names of networks you are not connected to.
  • Saved places (optional). If you create a saved place — for example "Home" or "Work" — we store the coordinate and radius you set for it until you delete it.

3.3 Retention — we keep only your latest position

We retain only the most recent position. Each location update overwrites the previous one. We do not build or keep a location history, we do not keep a trail of where you have been, and neither you nor your partner can look up where you were yesterday.

Saved places are the exception: they are coordinates you deliberately created, and they persist until you delete them.

3.4 Who can see it

Your location is shared only with your paired partner. It is never sent to analytics providers, never sent to advertisers, never sold, and never shared with any other third party. Our AI providers never receive it.

3.5 Turning it off

You can pause or disable location sharing at any time from the Together screen or in iOS Settings → Privacy & Security → Location Services → Closer. Turning it off stops collection immediately. Unpairing revokes location sharing for both partners immediately, and the stored position is removed.

3.6 ZIP code for Date Ideas — separate and unrelated

Separately from the Together feature, if you request Date Ideas you may type in a ZIP code so suggestions are near you. That ZIP code is typed by you, is sent with the Date Ideas request, and is not derived from GPS and not stored as location history. Using Date Ideas does not require or enable location sharing.

4. Health Data — Cycle Tracking

4.1 What we collect

Closer includes optional cycle tracking. It is off unless you enable it. If you enable it, we collect:

  • Period start and end dates
  • Symptoms you log
  • Mood and energy levels you log
  • Notes you write
  • Predicted ovulation and fertile windows, which we calculate from the dates you enter

This is health data. We treat it as the most sensitive information in the app. Closer does not collect fitness, workout, step, or activity data of any kind.

4.2 Per-field partner sharing controls

You decide, field by field, what your partner can see. You independently choose whether your partner sees:

  • Your current cycle phase
  • Your predicted dates
  • Your fertile window

Your logged symptoms, energy levels, and notes are never visible to a partner under any setting. There is no toggle that turns them on. They are yours alone.

4.3 What we never do with it

  • Cycle data is never sent to AI models — including Anthropic.
  • Cycle data is never used to train any model, ours or anyone else's.
  • Cycle data is never exported to analytics providers such as PostHog.
  • Cycle data is never shared with advertisers, data brokers, or any third party.

4.4 Deleting it

You can delete all of your cycle data at any time from Cycle Settings → Delete All Cycle Data. This removes your cycle entries and predictions from our systems, independently of the rest of your account.

4.5 Not medical advice

Cycle predictions in Closer are calendar-method estimates based on the dates you enter. They are not medical advice, not a diagnosis, and not a form of contraception. Do not rely on them to prevent or achieve pregnancy. Talk to a healthcare professional about your health.

4.6 Legal basis under GDPR

If you are in the European Economic Area or the UK, cycle data is special-category health data under Article 9 of the GDPR. We process it only on the basis of your explicit consent, which you give by enabling cycle tracking, and which you can withdraw at any time by disabling the feature and deleting your cycle data. See Section 15.

5. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect to:

  • Create and manage your account via Clerk authentication
  • Verify that you meet our minimum age requirement
  • Sync your content and couple data in real time via our Convex backend
  • Display partner-shared content to you and your connected partner
  • Show live distance and approach status between paired partners, when you enable it
  • Track cycle phases and generate predictions, when you enable cycle tracking
  • Send push notifications for reminders, streak alerts, partner activity, and daily questions
  • Track and display relationship milestones, streaks, achievements, and your calendar view
  • Suggest activities through Daily Sparks, Roll the Dice, and Date Ideas
  • Power therapy lessons and relationship exercises
  • Process and restore subscription purchases
  • Improve app features and user experience using product interaction analytics
  • Diagnose crashes and performance problems
  • Respond to support inquiries and customer service requests
  • Send transactional emails (account security alerts, service notices)
  • Enforce our Terms of Service and prevent abuse
  • Comply with legal obligations

6. Data Shared Between Partners

Closer is built for two people. When you connect with a partner, the following data is visible to your partner:

  • Photos and videos you upload to shared memories
  • Love notes and messages you send to them
  • Your daily mood check-in (if you choose to share it)
  • Your answers to daily questions (when both partners have answered)
  • Your care activities and appreciation entries directed at your partner
  • Streak count and achievement badges
  • Your display name and profile photo
  • Shared calendar activity — the check-ins, sparks, and milestones you have shared
  • Your live distance and approach status — only while you have Together location sharing enabled
  • Your cycle phase, predicted dates, and fertile window — only the specific fields you have individually chosen to share

The following data is private to you and never visible to your partner:

  • Your logged cycle symptoms, energy levels, and cycle notes — under any setting
  • Your precise coordinates as raw data, your Wi-Fi network name, and your saved places
  • Your date of birth and birth year
  • Your login credentials and authentication tokens
  • Your notification settings and device preferences
  • Your purchase history and subscription details
  • Any content not explicitly shared within the app

Your partner sees a distance and an approach status derived from your position, not a map trail or a history of where you have been.

7. Photo, Video, and Media Storage

Photos and videos you upload are stored on our backend infrastructure provided by Convex, Inc. All data is encrypted in transit using TLS (Transport Layer Security). Stored media is only accessible to you and your connected partner.

Photo and video sharing between partners is optional — you choose what to upload, and nothing is uploaded automatically. We do not scan your camera roll.

You can delete any photo, video, or memory from within the app at any time. Deletion requests are processed promptly within the app.

8. Third-Party Service Providers

We work with the following providers, who process data on our behalf under contract. We share only the data necessary for them to perform their service.

  • Convex, Inc. (United States) — backend infrastructure, database, real-time sync, and media storage. Processes account data, all content you create, cycle data, and location data. Convex Privacy Policy
  • Clerk, Inc. (United States) — authentication and user management. Processes email address, phone number, name, profile photo, and session data. Clerk Privacy Policy
  • Apple, Inc. — iOS platform and App Store distribution, push notification delivery (APNs), and in-app purchase processing (StoreKit). Apple Privacy Policy
  • RevenueCat, Inc. (United States) — subscription management and entitlement status. Processes purchase history, an app user identifier, and device identifiers. RevenueCat Privacy Policy
  • PostHog, Inc. (United States) — product analytics. Processes product interaction events, user ID, device ID, and email address. Never receives cycle data, location data, journal text, love notes, or messages. PostHog Privacy Policy
  • Functional Software, Inc. (Sentry) (United States) — crash and performance reporting. Processes crash data and performance data, which are not linked to your identity. Sentry Privacy Policy
  • Anthropic, PBC — AI-generated relationship insights and date ideas. Receives display names and aggregated counts, plus the ZIP code you type for a Date Ideas request. It never receives raw cycle data, journal text, love notes, messages, or location coordinates. See Section 9. Anthropic Privacy Policy
  • OpenWeather Ltd. — weather conditions shown on the Together screen. OpenWeather Privacy Policy

We do not sell your personal data. We do not share your data with advertisers or data brokers.

9. AI Features

Closer uses Anthropic's Claude models to generate relationship insights and date ideas. We are deliberately narrow about what we send.

What is sent to our AI provider:

  • Display names, so suggestions can address you and your partner by name
  • Aggregated counts — for example, how many check-ins or sparks you completed in a period
  • The ZIP code you type yourself when you request Date Ideas, so suggestions are nearby

What is never sent to our AI provider:

  • Raw cycle data of any kind — dates, symptoms, mood, energy, notes, or predictions
  • Journal text
  • Love notes and messages between you and your partner
  • Photos and videos
  • Precise location coordinates, Wi-Fi network names, or saved places

Your data is not used to train AI models — not ours, and not our provider's.

10. No Tracking, No Advertising, No Data Sales

To be explicit, and in the terms Apple uses:

  • We do not track you. We do not link your data with third-party data for advertising or measurement, and we do not share it with data brokers.
  • We do not collect the IDFA (Identifier for Advertisers) and we do not present the App Tracking Transparency prompt, because we have nothing to track you with.
  • We do not sell your personal data to anyone, for any purpose.
  • We do not serve advertising in Closer, and there are no ad networks in the app.
  • We do not share your data with data brokers.

Every data type described in this policy is collected for App Functionality, except for the subset also used for Analytics — email address, user ID, device ID, and product interaction — and crash and performance data used for diagnostics. None of it is used for tracking, advertising, or third-party marketing.

11. In-App Purchases and Subscriptions

Closer offers free features with optional premium subscriptions (Closer Premium). All payments and subscription billing are processed exclusively by Apple through the App Store. We never receive or store your payment card information.

We use RevenueCat to record and validate your purchase history and to determine whether your subscription is active, so your Premium features work across your devices and after a reinstall.

Apple's privacy practices for payment processing are governed by the Apple Privacy Policy.

12. Push Notifications

Closer sends push notifications to keep you connected with your partner, including:

  • Daily question reminders
  • Partner activity alerts (when your partner checks in, answers a question, or sends a note)
  • Streak reminders
  • Milestone and anniversary reminders
  • Care feature notifications
  • Together arrival and approach alerts, only while location sharing is enabled by both of you

You can opt out of push notifications at any time through your iPhone Settings → Notifications → Closer.

13. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as your account is active or as needed to provide our services.

  • Account data: retained while your account is active.
  • Content (photos, videos, messages, responses): retained until you delete it or delete your account.
  • Location data: only your most recent position is retained, and each update overwrites it. It is deleted when you disable sharing or unpair. Saved places are retained until you delete them. No location history is kept.
  • Cycle data: retained until you delete it via Cycle Settings → Delete All Cycle Data, or until you delete your account.
  • Crash and performance data: retained for up to 90 days, and is not linked to your identity.
  • Upon account deletion: your personal data is deleted within 30 days of your request, except where we are required by law to retain it.
  • Backup retention: deleted data may persist in encrypted backups for up to 90 days before permanent deletion.

14. Security

We implement industry-standard security measures to protect your personal data, including:

  • TLS encryption for all data in transit
  • Encryption at rest for data stored on our backend
  • Secure authentication via Clerk with industry-standard protocols
  • Per-couple access rules on our database, so only you and your partner can read your shared data
  • Limited employee access to personal data on a need-to-know basis

No system is 100% secure. While we take reasonable measures to protect your data, we cannot guarantee absolute security. In the event of a data breach that affects your rights and freedoms, we will notify affected users as required by applicable law.

15. Your Rights and Choices

Depending on your location, you may have the following rights regarding your personal data:

For All Users

  • Access: request a copy of the personal data we hold about you.
  • Deletion: request deletion of your account and personal data.
  • Correction: request correction of inaccurate personal data.
  • Portability: request your data in a portable format.
  • Turn off optional collection in-app: disable location sharing from the Together screen, disable cycle tracking and delete cycle data from Cycle Settings, and revoke location permission in iOS Settings.
  • Opt out of analytics: contact us to opt out of product analytics collection.

California Residents (CCPA/CPRA)

Under California law, California residents have the right to know what personal information is collected, the right to delete it, the right to correct it, and the right to opt out of the sale or sharing of personal information. We do not sell or share personal information as those terms are defined under the CCPA, and we do not use it for cross-context behavioral advertising. We will not discriminate against you for exercising these rights.

Precise geolocation and health data are "sensitive personal information" under the CPRA. We use them only to provide the features you enabled, and never to infer characteristics about you.

European and UK Residents (GDPR)

If you are located in the European Economic Area or the United Kingdom, you have rights under the GDPR including the right of access, rectification, erasure, restriction of processing, data portability, and the right to object. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with your local supervisory authority.

Our legal bases for processing are:

  • Contract performance — to provide the app services, sync your data, and manage your subscription.
  • Legitimate interests — to improve our services, diagnose crashes, and prevent abuse.
  • Consent — for optional collection, including precise location, product analytics, and push notifications. You can withdraw consent at any time.
  • Explicit consent under Article 9 — cycle tracking data is special-category health data under Article 9 of the GDPR, and we process it solely on the basis of your explicit consent, given when you enable cycle tracking. You can withdraw that consent at any time by disabling the feature and deleting your cycle data.

To exercise any of these rights, contact us at: closerlabs@gmail.com

16. Age Requirement and Children's Privacy

Closer is intended for users 13 years of age or older. This matches our App Store age rating. You may not create an account or use Closer if you are under 13.

How we verify this. We request your date of birth during onboarding solely to verify that you meet this minimum age. The check runs server-side, and we store only your birth year — never the day or month. We do not use your date of birth for any other purpose.

We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13, in compliance with the Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA). If you believe a child under 13 has provided us with personal information, please contact us immediately at closerlabs@gmail.com and we will delete that information.

Features intended for adult relationships. Some features in Closer are designed for adult relationships. Each is opt-in and off by default:

  • Cycle tracking
  • Photo and video sharing between partners
  • Live location sharing (Together)

None of these are enabled unless a user deliberately turns them on. If you are a parent or guardian and want to discuss these features, contact us at the address above.

17. International Data Transfers

Closer is operated from the United States, and our backend and the majority of our service providers are located in the United States. If you are accessing our services from outside the United States, your information — including, where you have enabled those features, your location and cycle data — will be transferred to, stored, and processed in the United States.

Where required, we rely on the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses or an equivalent transfer mechanism with our providers. By using our services, you consent to this transfer.

18. Changes to This Privacy Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. When we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by email at least 30 days before the changes take effect. Your continued use of Closer after that date constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

We encourage you to review this page periodically for the latest information on our privacy practices.
